Students will meet next week to plan a memorial service for two students killed last weekend while returning from a Billy Joel concert in Endicott, N.Y.
Members of Association of Residence Hall Students remembered John Scott and Elizabeth Munley at Monday night's ARHS meeting. And the East Halls Residence Association may name a piano lounge in Findlay Commons after Scott, who was elected president of Snyder Hall two weeks ago, said Darryl Bundridge, East Halls president.
In other business, changes in the on campus telephone system will be implemented March 2, said Melissa Pressler, ARHS vice president.
Under the new system, students using on-campus phones will have to dial 8 instead of 9 to reach off-campus numbers. Students also will be able to dial the familiar 911 emergency number on campus instead of the current 110.
Pressler also reminded council members of upcoming elections for a new ARHS council. Nominations for a new president and vice president will run from Feb. 12 to 19. Elections for these positions will be held March 5. The other council positions will be elected March 21.
In addition, Project Bag'It, a benefit sponsored by ARHS and Residence Hall Programs to aid the homeless of State College, collected more than 100 sleeping bags and blankets, said ARHS adviser Dane Foust.
The blankets will be distributed Feb. 19 to 23 through a social service agency to the homeless in State College and surrounding areas, he said. Any extra blankets will be taken to Harrisburg to be further distributed, he added.
Also, Dr. Marty Natham, a physician at the Mountaintop Medical Center in Snowshoe, has offered to give free physicals to any homeless people found by the distributors.
