Absurd statements

Ignorance is the only word that sums up Chino Wilson's (column) in The Daily Collegian on Feb. 2, 1990. The fact that a student of a university could write such rubbish is beyond my means. He writes of the AIDS virus and the undermining of African-American people.

Chino Wilson, apparently a budding molecular and cell biologist, writes that "the government . . . called for the creation of a virus that would wipe out the entire (African) race." This absurd statement only feeds the flame of ignorance about the AIDS virus.

I am very disturbed that a paper so widely read would even allow such nonsense to be published. The AIDS disease, a deadly virus of unknown origin, infects the immune system of the carrier, regardless of race, sex or religion.

He also writes, "Common sense should tell you some truth . . . killer epidemics don't just pop up." Yet again another ignorant statement. If Chino Wilson had ever studied epidemiology, the study of disease in a population, he would learn of many diseases which have "just popped up."

Is Chino next going to write that the flu, leprosy, tuberculosis, and polio viruses were created to kill certain races? Tell me, Chino, where did they come from?

And finally, to address his final solution to the AIDS virus and racism: violence. I do agree that racism is well and alive in the American people. But I thank God every day that there have been Mahatma Ghandis and Martin Luther King Jr.'s to show that violence in any situation is wrong.

I only hope and pray that there are others who feel as I do. I only wish that people of all colors could come together and talk; instead of inciting each other to violence.
