Myth holds true
Steve Cherry, a Collegian (staff writer), wrote a very interesting (column) on "fraternity myths." In it he attempted to clean up the well-deserved bad image fraternities have. It was a nice try . . . an elegant dose of fiction by a fraternity brother too caught up in the system to realize how decadent it really is. I have a few questions for Mr. Cherry: -- If fraternities truly believed in "brotherhood," then why are so few of them interracial? -- Why is it that all the guys I've known to rush fraternities told me they did it because it gave them easier accessibility to sorority girls? Fraternities only promote a "mass mind" mentality which has resulted in gang rapes and other forms of despicable behavior. Not surprisingly, the Ku Klux Klan started as a fraternal organization, and it seems this racial intolerance by frats is on the upswing with the recent Fiji Rosh Hashanah party and the University of Pennsylvania stripper party. It is true that fraternities aren't all bad. They perform various social functions and fund raisers that at least give them the facade of responsible behavior. They also teach you how to lie, conform, become racially insensitive and brag. I've heard enough racist, sexist slurs at frat parties to convince me that the Greek system only breeds arrogance. So to Steve Cherry, and anyone else who tries to clear up the "fraternity myths," don't bother. You'd only be lying to us, and most importantly you'd be lying to yourself.
