Step right up! Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, and witness the greatest show on campus.
In about a month and half, the Penn State Alumni Association and the Penn State Thespians will present their second annual talent show, SYNERGY '90 -- A Penn State Class Talent Show. The program will feature University students showing off their talents in the areas of music, theater, dance and variety.
Auditions for the show will take place next week from Monday, Feb. 5 to Wednesday, Feb. 7 in Schwab Auditorium. Audition sign-ups end today, and groups or individuals may register from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the HUB information desk.
"We hope to have about 50 to 60 acts try out. From those, a panel of nine judges will choose 18 numbers to be performed,"said William Miller, director and producer of SYNERGY '90.
SYNERGY '90 has been dubbed "CLASS ACT", said Gwen Kaufman, coordinator of the Student Alumni Association.
"The show is a class talent show. We hope to remind students that they belong to a certain class, for instance the class of '90. We also want to give students a chance to share their talent with the Penn State community," Kaufman said.
The show has been divided into six categories of competition. Student acts from each class will compete against other acts in the same class. There will also be a cross-class category where groups of students from various classes compete against similar group.
The acts will be evaluated on the following criteria: stage presence, creativity, technical skill, appearance and overall showmanship.
The winning acts from each class will receive a $250 prize. In addition, another prize will be presented to the best overall performance as well as the first and second runners-up. The cash prizes total $2,400.
"We are hoping that we will have enough money left over to give away a door prize. We hope to give someone in the audience a trip to New York City where they can see a live show," Kaufman said.
She said those involved in the show are giving their time voluntarily.
The Thespians are helping to stage the show, said Miller. They will serve as the stage crew for the performance.
Centre Dimensions, a jazz ensemble, will be providing music for the performance. The ensemble will perform the opening piece and the finale, as well as pieces for the individual acts, said Miller.
"We are trying to revive a class tradition. We hope this will be a successful revival of a Penn State tradition," Kaufman said.
