International Student Council to host volleyball tournament

Collegian Staff Writer

The International Student Council will sponsor an International Volleyball Tournament at 9 Saturday morning in the Intramural Building's second gym.

Twelve teams are scheduled to play in this day-long event, but not only international students will participate.

"Anybody can play. We want to get many organizations together," said Frederik Wenzel, president of the European Students Club.

Many international organizations are participating in the event including the European Students Club, the Muslim Students Association, the Tunisian Students Association, the Pakistani Forum and the Puerto Rican Students Association.

A small donation will be asked for the refreshments served and T-shirts will also be sold. The shirt will bear the saying 'Competitor International Volleyball Tournament 1990.'

Money received from the sales and from the $15 registration fee will go toward ISC funds for future events and offset tournament's cost, said Jim Lynch, associate director of the Office of International Students.

However, the main purpose of the tournament is not to raise money, said Bilal Muhammad Khan, ISC publicity officer and president of the Pakistani Forum.

"It is an opportunity to interact with each other -- international students and American students," Khan said. "It is an opportunity to compete and have fun."

The volleyball tournament is a new event this year, said Abbas Aminmansour, president of ISC. For the past several years, a soccer tournament has been played instead, he added.

The ISC has held a Fall semester soccer tournament for the past nine years and three previous volleyball tournaments, Lynch said.

"Volleyball never caught on big in the past. It's becoming a newer tradition," said Lynch, who is also ISC's adviser.

Khan said he came up with the idea for the event and took on the responsibility of organizing it. Volleyball was chosen by the ISC as the spring sports event, but soccer will continue to be played in the fall.

"They (the ISC) want one sports event each semester," Lynch said. "And the most international sport after soccer is volleyball. Everyone in the world plays."

Although registration has ended, 11 teams were made with at least five teams of American students registered, Khan added.
