BELLEFONTE -- A male University student was ordered yesterday to stand trial after a woman testified he allegedly raped her at his fraternity house in December.
Al J. Romanelli, 21, was charged with rape, indecent assault, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment which allegedly occurred at Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, 409 E. Fairmount Ave., on Dec. 2.
Romanelli is free on a $50,000 bond posted by his parents early Monday evening. A trial date has not been set.
During the preliminary hearing, held at Centre County Courthouse, the woman -- also a University student -- testified she and her roommate met Romanelli and another fraternity member just as the two women were about to leave.
The alleged victim described Romanelli as very intoxicated, leaning against her and swaying slightly during the night of the reported incident.
Asked by both Assistant District Attorney Eileen Tucker and Defense Attorney Ed Blanarik how much she had to drink during the evening, the woman repeatedly said she had only a partial cup of beer and half a shot glass of rum.
During the testimony, the woman said Romanelli tried to kiss her while in an upstairs room, but she refused and sat next to her friend who was talking with another fraternity member.
"I really had nothing to worry about at this point," she said, testifying in front of a courtroom filled with more than 50 people.
The woman said Romanelli indicated to her that her friend and the other man wanted to be alone. She said she went with Romanelli to his room and they talked for about 20 minutes.
The woman, upon returning to the other room, discovered her roommate had already left to return to their residence. When the alleged victim called there, Romanelli reportedly grabbed the phone and told the roommate she was staying at the fraternity. She testified the defendant reportedly yelled, telling the roommate that the woman was fine and shouting obscenities.
As the woman re-entered Romanelli's room to retrieve her coat, the defendant allegedly closed the door and advanced on her, telling her she should stay the night.
"I kept saying, 'I have to go home, I have to go home,' " the woman testified quietly.
District Justice Robert May ordered a five-minute recess when the woman was unable to continue.
Her voice shaking, the woman stated that Romanelli said, "You want this just as much as I do."
The woman said Romanelli allegedly prevented her from leaving the room and then raped her.
Afterward, Romanelli reportedly tried to convince the woman to stay the night and that she wanted to have sexual intercourse. The woman testified she had put herself in a "trance" during the alleged assault and could not believe what had happened.
When the woman repeatedly said she wanted to go home, Romanelli allegedly yelled at her that she was making him angry and that she was "ungrateful."
"All I wanted to do was get the hell out of the house," she testified, her composure again under control.
Romanelli, who is from Coatesville, reportedly said, "Can I call you?" as the woman left the fraternity.
During cross-examination, Blanarik asked the woman if she ever told her roommate that she wanted to "hook up."
The woman denied making such a statement.
Blanarik said afterward, "I believe we will achieve an acquittal on all charges." He added that the sexual encounter was voluntary.
