Twigs aren't art
We were amused by the picture of "art" which appeared on the front page of the Jan. 25 Collegian. You have to wonder why someone would make a "sculpture" of sticks and leaves and name it "Being There II" because Boy Scouts across America have been re-making this "sculpture" for years, and they call it "Campfire." Also, putting this picture on the front page seems discriminatory to Physical Plant employees, who have been piling sticks and leaves all year, but have never been recognized. It's all in the terminology; one person calls it "art," another person calls it "debris." Some may say that we don't appreciate good sculptures. Our idea of art is something that is aesthetically pleasing and/or has a strong underlying meaning. Art should be something special which requires a great deal of talent to create. This is the type of art we admire and appreciate. The only meaning that we discovered in "Being There II" was that people had to find another place to sit. Now, we are just waiting to see if future Collegian front pages will include "sculptures" entitled "Big Snowpile," "Grass Clippings IV" and "Autumn Leaves."
