USG, CCSG may combine office space

Collegian Staff Writer

Undergraduate Student Government President Janyne Althaus said last night that USG executives and Council of Commonwealth Student Government members have been negotiating combining office space so the two organizations can work together.

The USG Business Department will move to the CCSG office in 101F HUB, Althaus said. And CCSG will move into the department's current office in 203A HUB.

"It has been beneficial for students having CCSG and USG working together," she said.

"It gives CCSG the recognition they need," said Coordinator for CCSG P.J. Sternberg. "I believe to be professional, you've got to look professional and act professional. We can't be professional with our tiny office and without equipment that is updated."

Althaus said she did not need the senate's approval to move the offices.

"I don't need your approval, but I'd like your approval," she said.

Althaus said there is no problem in moving the offices because the HUB does not have contracts with organizations. She added that if the move occurred there would be a contract with the HUB to ensure that USG and CCSG would remain in their offices.

In response to Althaus's moving proposal, the senate passed a resolution asking the USG Supreme Court to decide if it is legal for Althaus to move offices.

Town Senator Mike McKee, who sponsored the resolution, said it is based on the fact that the senate plays a large role in the major decisions of the Business Department.

The resolution also asks the executive branch to cease relocation of the Business Department until the court renders its decision.

Most senators said the senate should have a part in deciding whether to move the Business Department.

"The Business Department does have controls put on by the senate," Bowman said. "We deserve to have our say in what happens to the Business Department."

Althaus and Board of Trustee Representative for CCSG Brian Donaldson said moving the organizations in the same office will help both organizations for several reasons:

-- The Business Department Office, which deals with money, will have more security in the proposed office.

-- It is a permanent place for the Business Department to sell such things as spring break trips, bus tickets or calendars. Currently, department members must go to the HUB desks to sell these items.
