Redish elected Panhellenic Council president

Collegian Staff Writer

Continuing the Panhellenic Council's role in women's issues and improving relations between sororities are the primary goals of newly elected Panhellenic Council president Stephanie Redish.

Redish was elected Monday night, replacing former president Kelly Ayotte following installation ceremonies Feb. 11. After Monday night's elections, Redish said her goal for future Panhel activities is to establish an "outwardly mobile, yet inwardly focused" council.

The official induction of the new officers will occur at an induction brunch Feb. 11 at the Atherton Hilton.

Ayotte defined her term as "pro-active" because of the social and community service programs initiated this year. In the future, Ayotte said, she hopes Panhel will continue this trend and work toward eliminating stereotypes of sorority women.

"Panhel (should) continue reaching out to other groups and promoting the positive things in sororities," Ayotte said.

Although Panhel will continue to run programs and take stands on women's issues to improve the community, Redish said she will also try to improve inter-sorority relations.

Establishing a Panhel/IFC joint council is one way to give greater direction to the Greek community, Redish (junior-speech communications) said.

Correction: When this article was originally published in the print version it incorrectly identified the leaders of a sorority. Stephanie Redish was the first president of Delta Zeta, 3 Hastings Hall, while Lori Ercole was the founding president of the sorority.

Encouraging sorority co-sponsorship of events and greater interaction between the delegates of sororities will help inter-sorority relations, said Redish, the first president of Delta Zeta sorority of 3 Hastings, formed Fall 1988.

The other newly elected council members echoed Redish's goals while specifying aims for their offices.

The other elected officers are:

-- Executive vice president Colleen Finnegan, former Panhel delegate from Alpha Phi sorority, 1 Wolf.

-- Secretary Deneen Ludwig, former Panhel delegate from Kappa Delta sorority, 101 South Cross Hall.

-- Treasurer Melinda Brower, former Panhel delegate from Sigma Sigma Sigma, 3 Stone Hall.

Finnegan said she hopes to establish a Panhel scholarship committee made up of all the sorority scholarship chairwomen to address academic programming.

In her role as junior Panhel coordinator and the leader of pledge educators, Ludwig said she hopes to promote sorority interaction among younger members of sororities.

Bettering relations between the Panhel treasurer and sorority treasurers is her primary goal, Brower said.

Redish, Finnegan and Panhel adviser Leila Moore will choose the executive board of Panhel from submitted applications and interviews. The appointed positions include: administrative vice president; chapter programs; rush coordinator; public relations coordinator; judicial board chairwoman; and administrative assistant.
