Hall's 51'1" triple jump new PSU record

Collegian Sports Writer

Ricardo Hall set a new Penn State record of 51'1" and placed ninth in the triple jump to lead the Penn State contingent at this weekend's Bud Lite Invitational.

Hall was the second collegiate finisher in the event. Eugene Kortengen of George Mason, the only collegiate in front of Hall, finished first with a jump of 54'8".

"We got a lot of personal bests out of the meet, but more than anything we got good competitiveness out of it," Coach Harry Groves said.

Shot putters C.J. Hunter and Phil Caraher placed second and third, tossing 61'11" and 58'7" in the shot put.

Lion Steve Brown placed third and provisionally qualified for NCAAs in the 3,000-meter run with 8:03.29. Aidan O'Reilly ran 8:09.05 for sixth place.

"My main purpose was to go in and do well in the race," Brown said. "I ran a pretty competitive race."

The Lions finished fourth in the 3,200-meter relay in 7:31.56. Georgetown won the event in 7:26.07, an NCAA qualifying time. The Lions' relay team consisted of Joe Stegbauer (1:53.66), Jon Strange (1:53.95), Mark Anderson (1:51.56) and Doug Walter (1:52.07).

"We were competitive with every other team," Walter said. "We were pleased with the time; that was our first time out in the two-mile relay."

Walter also placed second in the mile with 4:09.03. Doug Shultz of Alabama won the race in 4:08.88.

Walter said running on consecutive days didn't bother him.

"It probably helped to get the first race out of the way; I wasn't as nervous," he said.

Walter said he took the lead of the race at the start because the race was crowded and he wanted to get out of the traffic. He lost his lead on the backstretch, the last 100 meters. He said he caught up to Shultz, but coming out of the last turn Shultz took off.

"I was happy with (my time in the mile), (but) I would have liked to run faster," Walter said.

Lion Mike Crescenzi (4:12.2) placed fifth. In the open mile, Lion Jeff Novak ran 4:16.6 and placed third.

The Lions finished fourth in Saturday's 3,200-meter relay in 7:44.64. Mike Castillo (1:56.71), Andy Scott (1:54.11), Eric Sturtevant (1:55.08) and Marc Taylor (1:58.02) made up the team.

Mark Algeri and Meson Ternay finished seventh and eighth in the pole vault, both jumping 16 feet.

"I was nervous in the beginning of the meet," Ternay said. "I put too much pressure on myself during the competition."

Ternay said after he practiced he felt less nervous and thought that everything was fine. But he said every attempt he made, his technique was off. Only a freshman, Ternay has already qualified for IC4As with his best jump so far, 16'5¾".
