Grapplers looking to increase streak in weekend match

Collegian Sports Writer

The 49ers do not have a monopoly on predicted blowouts for Sunday.

The wrestling team will face Cleveland State, which has lost to Division III John Carroll and Miami University of Ohio, in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup at 2 Sunday afternoon in Rec Hall.

If the No. 6 Lions lose this weekend, you can bet something is wrong in the cosmos.

Penn State won 22-of-30 bouts last weekend while defeating Navy, 28-9, North Carolina State, 26-8, and Maryland, 31-5. The three wins increased the Lions' Rec Hall record to 30-2-1 over the past four seasons.

It gets worse for the Vikings. Penn State is currently on a nine- year, 54-match winning streak against EWL opponents, the last loss coming in 1981 to Bloomsburg. The Lions are 10-1 in the series with Cleveland State, the only loss coming in the first meeting, the year the Vikings won the EWL.

"I think in this match the mood will be a little easier, they'll probably be a little joking around in the locker room," 167-pounder Jason Suter (17-4-1) said. "But once we hit the mat it will be all business."

The Vikings do have a few gems scattered in their lineup, namely Matt Peters (12-5) at 158, Mike McKeon (14-5) at 167, Mike Millward (10-1) at 177 and Jeff Scherma (12-5) at heavyweight.

"We're not going to take them lightly," Coach Rich Lorenzo said, "because each one our guys has his own goals and his own job to go out there and try to push himself to the maximum, no matter who the opponent is. So we're going to respect Cleveland State and if we don't we'll probably get guys bumped off."

"As a team you don't want a let down," Suter said. "You have to have respect for your guy because anything can happen, so I don't think there will be a let down."

The Lions take on No. 3 Iowa (13-1) and No. 8 Iowa State (10-5) next weekend, but Lorenzo and the players do not think they will be looking ahead.

'We get psyched up one match at a time," 126-pounder Jeff Prescott said. "Whatever match we have we get fired up for to keep improving until nationals."

"I don't think they will (look ahead)," Lorenzo said. "The only thing I hope they see when they look at Iowa is the embarrassment they got in Virginia (at the National Dual Championships, where Iowa defeated the Lions 22-5) and they can get the same embarrassment here in Rec Hall against Cleveland State if they wrestle the same way."

The Lions are set back at 177, however, where freshman Adam Mariano (14-4-2) is out with a strep throat and is unlikely to wrestle Sunday. John Yankanich (7-5) will move up from 167 to take on Millward, who posts the best record for Cleveland State.
