Swimwomen's scoring method perturbs Brown

Collegian Sports Writer

Brown women's swimming coach Mark Johnston is angry.

Yesterday, he called Penn State coach Bob Krimmel to talk about the scoring for this weekend's meet at 1 p.m. Sunday in McCoy Natatorium. The NCAA rulebook lists two ways to score a meet: a 9-4-3-2-1 point system for individual events and 11-4-2 for relays, or a 5-3-1 point system for individuals and 7-0 for relays.

The coaches must agree which system will be used 10 days before the meet.

Johnston wanted to use the second scoring system, but Krimmel said no because it would hurt his team.

"We have the advantage in depth," Krimmel said. "Why should I take away our advantage?"

The Lady Lions have used the same system all year except for a meet against Syracuse. Even Princeton, another Ivy League school which usually uses the 5-3-1 system, swam the 9-4-3-2-1 system against Penn State this year.

"He (Johnston) said he won't swim us anymore," Krimmel said. "I told him I'm only looking out for my kids and he said that's a bit short-sided -- that's what I get paid for."

The Lady Lions, No. 2 in the East with a 9-2 record, are coming off their first loss in nine meets. The Lady Bruins are ranked fifth in the East and have a 5-2 record.

Last year, at Brown, the Lady Lions won the meet in the last relay. The Lady Lions have won the last two meetings, but the Lady Bruins lead the series, 7-2.

Fran McDermid, Jane Kleiderlein and Tracey Sheleheda will have their hands full in the 50-yard freestyle. Jennifer Boyd, the nation's No. 1 50 freestyler (22.65), will be on hand to test the strength of the Lady Lions. The Lady Lions average 24.5.

However, Johnston said that Boyd has a chronic shoulder problem and he is not certain whether or not she will swim in more than one event.

The Lady Bruins also boast the East's No. 1 500 freestyler and No. 1 400 individual medley swimmer, Joanna Zeiger.

The Lady Lions and Lady Bruins are gearing up for the Eastern Swimming Championships that will take place Feb. 22 at Pittsburgh. Both teams are still working hard and are not starting their rest periods for a couple of weeks.

"We place more emphasis on Easterns," Johnston said. "Penn State places more emphasis on dual meets. This is just a tune-up. I don't place much emphasis on dual meets."

"We place just as much emphasis on Easterns as they do," Krimmel said. "We'll see who finishes ahead of whom at Easterns," he said, chuckling.
