Chuck Mong, chairman of the Centre County Republican Committee, announced yesterday he will not seek re-election to his party's post.
Mong, who held the position for the last two years, said a lack of time and his new position as director of the Centre County Industrial Development Corporation will prevent him from running for a second term.
"I'm not throwing in the towel. I just won't be getting up for the next bell," Mong said.
A new chairman will be elected on May 15's state primary election, Mong said.
The next Republican administration will find the party in good functioning order, financially stable and with a solid volunteer base for conducting the upcoming general election, Mong said.
As chairman, Mong said he was responsible for overseeing the precinct leaders, and making sure they are instructed in recruitment, fund raising and other campaign tactics. Also, the new chairman should form basic committees such as advertising and fund raising, he said.
"It's a basic organizational skill that is needed," Mong said.
His new position prevents him from holding any official role but Mong said he would continue to be involved with the Republican party in a private way.
