Student parking fees to increase again, Stormer says

Collegian Staff Writer

Student parking fees will increase $20 next year, upping to $75 the price for off-campus students, the assistant vice president for safety and environmental services said at a University Student Advisory Board meeting last night.

David Stormer, who spoke about the University's five-year parking plan, said the plan will affect on-campus parking fees. On-campus students will pay $55 next year, he said.

By 1995, off-campus students will have to pay $115 for parking, on-campus students $75, he said.

Ken Martin, USAB vice president, said after the meeting that faculty/staff parking fees will increase by $4, to $12, starting July 1.

USAB members said they think the University is doing its best to deal with parking problems, but they were disappointed in the rising student fees.

"I think with the five-year parking plan, the University is making its best effort to accommodate every student, staff and faculty member," said Panhellenic Council President Kelly Ayotte. "I am very upset about how much the parking fee is going to increase."

"I heard rumors the prices were going to increase drastically," said USAB President Judy Falce. "That's what I'm worried about. It's a deterrent for students. Students have a hard enough time paying the fee now."

"Between 1990 and 1995 we need to add 2,200 spaces," Stormer said. "We'll add about 400 a year to continue to meet the demand and we'll control it with pricing and regulations."

The plan is a gradual plan that shifts parking around while increasing parking spaces. Stormer said the plan includes:

-- Constructing of a parking garage behind Eisenhower Auditorium which will provide 330 more spaces than at present.

-- Giving faculty and staff Parking Lot 80. This will increase faculty/staff parking by 290 spaces.

-- Moving commuter students from lot 80 to lot 44, adding 700 more spaces for commuters.

-- Moving non-residents from lot 44 to lot 83 north.

-- Adding a shuttle bus for students in lot 44 and faculty/staff in lot 80.

-- Adding 400 spaces in lot 44 for students and low-cost faculty/staff parking if needed.

-- Building another parking garage in the west part of campus due to increasing parking need and loss of parking due to construction.

In other business, USAB members closed the meeting to discuss an article, "Well I'll Be Dormed!" in The Daily Collegian Magazine Living Issue, about dorm living, Martin said.

"I understand that it may have been intended in a humorous light, but when living above a pig pen is shown as more positive than living in the residence halls, we have a definite problem," said Melissa Pressler, vice president for the Association of Residence Hall Students.

During the closed portion of the meeting USAB members also talked about the Collegian's internal policies, Martin said.
