The men's swimming and diving team ended it's toughest month of competition last night with a 148-95 win over Villanova. The Lions boosted their record to 4-3 in dual-meet action, while the Wildcats dropped to 6- 3.
"With the excitement and drama of the Pitt and Virginia meets," assistant coach Janie Brown said, "we need to take a little bit of time away. We're glad we don't have a meet this weekend so the guys can just focus on getting some rest."
Penn State now has a 10-day break before its next meet. Coach Peter Brown will use the time to let his team rest in hopes of qualifying more swimmers for the Eastern Seaboards and NCAA Championships.
Against Villanova, Penn State swept the 200-yard individual medley, 500 freestyle and one-meter diving event, in addition to winning five other events.
The Wildcats swept the 100 freestyle, an event the Lions usually win when swimming at full strength, and won four other individual events. Brown did not swim his team in their strongest events, but gave them a chance to swim in other races that they would usually not compete in.
The team of Walter Sopp, Tim Pfeuffer, Adam Carroll and Tim Boyd started off the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay in 3:30.21.
In the 200 individual medley, Drew Van Winkle took first in 1:57.79, James Wolfle was a close second in 1:57.98 and James Sloat finished third (1:59.85).
Brad Semle led the sweep of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:47.42. He was followed by Mike Klugo (4:49.99) and Bart Kimble (4:50.62).
Steve Zamborsky scored 285.30 in one-meter diving, followed by Mike Westwood (268.85) and Jeff Eagles (254.25). On three-meter board, Westwood took first with 280.20 with Zamborsky finishing second (263.85).
Sopp and a Villanova swimmer tied for first place in the 200 backstroke with the time of 1:55.57. Wolfle finished third in 2:03.29.
Quinn Carver won the 200 butterfly event in 1:55.64. Carroll took third in 1:59.55.
Penn State's team of Adelman, Boyd, Sopp and Boyce won the 400 freestyle in the time of 3:11.75.
Several Lions barely missed winning races. Adelman was touched out in the 200 freestyle, Thad Davis and William Hurst in the 50 freestyle and Pfeuffer in the 200 breaststroke.
The Lions next competition is a double dual-meet against LaSalle and St. Bonaventure on Feb. 3 at McCoy Natatorium.
