Weapons, ammunition shipment a mistake

Weapons and ammunition that arrived in the University Park Airport Tuesday morning were shipped to the airport by mistake, University Police Services said yesterday. The weapons were found in an unmarked piece of luggage.

The weapons, which arrived at 11 a.m. Tuesday, were: two uzi submachine guns, each with silencers; four handguns, one with a silencer; a shotgun; and ammunition for each weapon, police said.

The owner of the luggage was not on the plane and police said. Police did not say where the luggage came from or where it was supposed to be shipped. It was not intended to go to the University Park Airport.

The weapons were discovered when the piece of luggage was unloaded at the airport and did not have any shipping labels. Airport employees opened the luggage to inventory its contents and discovered the weapons, police said.

So far, the shipper of the weapons faces Federal Aviation Administration civil penalties for improperly transporting the firearms. According to FAA regulations, the airline must be notified of the shipment and the weapons must be packed in a hard, locked case labeled "firearms," police said.

The police are investigating a suspect and have contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to discover if the firearms are properly registered, police said. If they are not, criminal charges may be filed against the shipper.
