The publisher of the monthly newspaper The Wall Journal said yesterday the paper will suspend publication until next semester due to production problems.
"The issue coming out today is the last issue for this semester," Assistant Editor James Marino said yesterday. The publication refers to itself as "the monthly diary of the Penn State experience."
Publication of The Wall is supervised by a local division of Campus Communications, a company based in Baltimore, Md., said Greg Woodman, the company owner and publisher of The Wall.
Although University students are responsible for writing and editing the journal, the paper is published in Maryland through Happy Valley Productions, the State College division of Campus Communications.
Because the company publishes a number of other magazines during the spring, Woodman said the production staff is unable to handle publication of The Wall at this time. But he said the publication is not gone forever.
"We'll be back again in August," said Woodman.
Woodman added there is no financial or legal reason behind the suspended publication. The latest issue doubled its advertising revenue and was printed in full color, he added.
However, Woodman said he hopes to move the production and publication of The Wall to State College. If he is successful, The Wall could publish again this semester.
"We may still come out with one or two issues this year," said Woodman.
The first issue of The Wall was released in August 1988, and the paper has published 12 issues since, Woodman said.
Woodman said the newspaper is not a rival to The Daily Collegian, but an alternative that focuses on the lighter aspects of University news.
Some students said they will miss seeing the newspaper in their campus mailboxes this semester.
"They've always got those little tidbits -- trying to get at The Collegian," said John West (freshman-architectural engineering). "I like to see that competition."
West added The Wall offers another side of the news not featured in The Collegian.
"I like reading it -- it's fun to read. I guess I'll miss it," said Susan Clements (sophomore-liberal arts).
"I'm sad to see it go," Marino said, "but it's a business down there, and I understand that."
Woodman, a 1983 University graduate, said his company is also responsible for publishing sports annuals for several other universities, including the University of Maryland, Syracuse University and Notre Dame.
One year before his graduation, Woodman started The Penn State Football Annual. Woodman's company also produced the life-size cutouts of Joe Paterno and published a satire of The Collegian called The Calligulan.
