Letter to the Editor
Coverage is poor
The front page of The Daily Collegian on January 19, 1990 contained articles about civil rights, the State College Manor trial, the drug arrest of Mayor Barry, the re-opening of St. Paul's Church, and the last part of a series of articles about abortion. My only question to the editors is: How can you dump a national issue back on page 8? More specifically, the story about the Buckley's acquittal on all the preschool molestation charges? Granted nothing like that would ever happen at Penn State, let alone quaint little State College or even Pennsylvania. I glanced at two other newspapers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Washington Post, which devoted nearly half a page each to this historical trial. I don't understand why this "news" didn't appear on the front page? Don't you believe this story is more important than a picture of a man jumping a group of people, or did you need to have the "required" two photos on the front page? If I'm not mistaken, you could have placed the crying Mrs. Buckley, along with the entire article from the (Associated Press) wire, on the front page. I understand the over-conservative images of the Collegian and the University, which has no power over your publication decisions. You want to isolate these precious students into your microcosm of "thinking." More power to you and to the administration. I just hope you know that you will probably do more harm than good. When they graduate, these over-protected children will not know how to react to real life experience because YOU kept it from them. I thought we went to Penn State, not the State Penn.
