Lady Bonnies become latest A-10 victim

Collegian Sports Writers

Another night. Another game. Another 40-point romp.

Penn State 103, St. Bonaventure 57. Ho hum.

What has become common of late happened again Saturday night as the No. 21 Lady Lions (12-2) increased their Atlantic 10-leading mark to 6-0. Penn State holds a 10-game win streak dating back to Dec. 6.

St. Bonaventure (8-7 overall, 4-4 in the A-10) had its three-game conference win streak abruptly halted.

"I was pleased with a lot of things, we are a better team overall tonight then the last time we played them," Coach Rene Portland said.

The Lady Lions beat the Lady Bonnies on Dec. 9, 106-86.

Once again forward Susan Robinson led the Lady Lions in scoring, hitting for 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Four other players scored in double figures -- Tanya Garner with 15 points, Lynn Dougherty (13), Kathy Phillips (12) and, off the bench, Shelly Caplinger scored 12.

Using a defense geared to stop St. Bonaventure's guards from instigating the sideline fast break, Penn State held Lady Bonnies' scoring phenom forward Sue Shay to 18 points, three less than her average.

The team forced 27 turnovers and limited the opposition to only 31 percent shooting from the field, the lowest field goal percentage by an opponent this season.

"Defensive-wise, I think it was (one of our best games of the season)," shooting guard Garner said. "In the first game they scored 86 points on us and it was real important for us to keep it down and not let that happen again.

"Bonaventure is a good team, but not a high-scoring offensive team, so (we had) to concentrate and be aware of that because when we play the better teams, we can't afford to let them score that many points on us."

Penn State opened the game scoring the first 12 points and holding St. Bonaventure scoreless for the first five minutes.

The Lady Lions kept adding to the lead, behind the play of Garner and Dougherty. Garner scored 11 of her 15 points in the first stanza and Dougherty hit for nine points on 4-of-5 shooting.

"I am more confident, I am working on it (shooting) a lot to do the best I can," Dougherty said.

Portland also praised Dougherty's defensive performance.

"Lynn did a great job for us rebounding-wise," Portland said. "In the first half (Beth) Gromlowicz, their second leading rebounder and a great scorer for them, had virtually nothing."

The Lady Lions went into halftime leading 52-25 after Caplinger hit a three-pointer with three seconds left. She was fouled on the play but missed the front end of a foul shot that could have led to a possible five-point play.

Throughout the game, the team used the long-range shots to offset a potent inside game. Of Penn State's 43 field goals, 29 of them were inside the paint.

"We'd be stupid not to go inside," Portland said, "because our center (Kathy Phillips) is playing so well. We have a size advantage against most teams and have been working hard to to develop an inside- outside game."

Portland added it's important not to concentrate just on the outside shot or to solely depend on the inside play of Phillips, Robinson or Adrie DeVries. So lately the team has used both to set up the other.

"With the two inside (Robinson and Phillips) scoring 30-40 points a night," Garner said, "it opens up the kick out, fades and the transition game. We call on them a lot because the majority of the time when the ball goes off, we know it's in their hands."

Portland said she was pleased with her team's intensity during the first five minutes of the second half. During that span, the Lady Bonnies were held scoreless for 2:30 and the lead was increased to 30-plus points.

With 40 seconds to play, the loudest cheer of the night came as Caplinger assisted on a Terri Williams layup, giving the team its third 100-point outing of the season.

Penn State shot 54 percent from the field and turned the ball over a season-low nine times.

Gromlowicz finished with 12 points and and only five rebounds. Roni Hergenroeder contributed 10. Shay finished with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Notes: The Lady Lions finished 5-0 in this homestand. They are 7-0 on the season at Rec Hall. Last year, Penn State finished 8-7 there . . . Tanya Garner's one three-point field goal increases her Penn State record to 77 . . . The 25-point average margin of victory is third in the latest NCAA rankings, behind No. 2 Stanford and No. 1 Louisiana Tech . . . When the week started, the team was ranked No. 7 nationally in field goal percentage.
