One woman was killed and a girl was hospitalized in separate accidents during the rainy and snow-filled weekend. A total of five accidents were reported.
Bessy Heffner of Windsor died at Centre Community Hospital after a one-car accident on Route 192 at 12:05 yesterday afternoon. Frederick C. Bahn, 71, was also riding in the car driven by Frances C. Bahn, 69, both of Windsor. Both were treated and released, Centre Community Hospital officials said.
Rockview state police said that for an unknown reason the car, which was traveling east, crossed into the west lane of traffic. The car traveled off the road, struck an embankment, flipped and came to rest across a ditch, police said. Heffner was thrown from the car. Hospital officials did not know the cause of death yesterday and scheduled an autopsy for this morning.
A 16-year-old Boalsburg girl was hospitalized after a separate accident that happened at 3:26 Saturday afternoon, State College Bureau of Police Services said. Megan Schnellbaugh is suffering from a concussion and is in good condition at Centre Community Hospital, hospital officials said.
State College police said Schnellbaugh was traveling on West Branch Road in Harris Township when her car slid off the road and hit a tree.
Two people were injured after the car they were traveling in struck a bridge support on Route 1005 in Walker Township, Rockview state police said.
The car, driven by Lynn Bennett Jr., 22, Mingoville, went out of control at 6:46 p.m. Saturday and struck the bridge, police said. Bennett and his passenger, Andrew L. Bruno, 3, also of Mingoville, were treated and released from Centre Community Hospital. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, police said.
A one-car accident on Route 144 in Potter Township Saturday resulted in only minor injuries for a Pleasant Gap girl.
Jill R. Leathers, 15, was treated and released from Centre Community Hospital after the car she was riding in hit a power pole at 9:45 p.m., Rockview state police said. The car, driven by David S. McMurtrie, 19, Bellefonte, lost traction in slush on the road while making a left turn, police said. The car spun around before hitting the pole.
No one was injured in a two-car accident Saturday in Potter Township but both cars had to be towed from the scene, Rockview state police said.
Rick Barr, Spring Mills, was driving west on Route 322 at 9:05 a.m. when his car went into an uncontrollable spin, police said. Barr's car collided with a car heading west driven by Carmine W. Prestia Jr., 1206 S. Allen St.
Rockview state police speculated that weather conditions were a factor in some of the accidents.
