Appreciate Dylan
In response to Gregory Roth's analysis of the Bob Dylan concert (Jan. 14), I would like to add a few points of my own so that students may have a greater appreciation for his appearance at Penn State. One common fault of those who only know a little bit about Dylan is that they tend to take him too seriously. Throughout the concert, Dylan displayed an uncharacteristic amount of enthusiasm. He jammed, sweated, smiled, said thank you more than once, and spoke whole sentences! All of that may seem trivial to some, but for those of us who admire him, it felt like Penn State was more than just a warm-up date for his European tour. His choice of songs went beyond "perfunctory" classics and Oh! Mercy material. "You Angel You," "Pretty Peggy-O" and "Tight Connection to My Heart" are terrific songs that seemed to go unappreciated by the audience. As for the encore, Dylan had people running up to the front dancing and wishing he would play more. Bob Dylan is truly a Godsend. Despite criticisms of his voice and appearance, he will continue to be himself, to write and sing for whatever reason he does, and to influence those who let his words drift into their hearts. Thanks, Bob.
