Former Manor aide's trial to begin

Collegian Staff Writer

Charles R. Medzie, a former State College Manor Nursing Home nurse's aide, will stand trial today six months after his arrest on multiple assault charges.

Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar said Medzie, of Allport, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, nine counts of simple assault and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.

Gricar said the charges stem from alleged abuses of four elderly patients in the home on 405 Waupelani Drive. Gricar said none of the alleged victims will testify at the trial.

This is the second trial in connection with alleged abuses at the nursing home which closed in October after state health officials uncovered a myriad of alleged assaults in a July investigation.

In November, a jury found Timothy S. Berrena, 27, guilty on four counts of simple assault and four counts of reckless endangerment. Berrena, who fed vomit to a partially blind patient, has not been sentenced yet and was released on supervised bail at the time of his conviction.

Chris Pentz, Medzie's attorney, could not be reached for comment.

Medzie is accused of allegedly feeding a patient human feces and various other forms of abuse such as allegedly whipping patients with a towel, Gricar said.

Still awaiting trial are the former top administrators of the now empty home. Former Administrator John Fabrizio, 51, of Bethel Park and former Director of Nursing Eleanor Kraft, 49, of State College were arrested in September on charges of reckless endangerment for allegedly ignoring abuses reported by employees.

Court officials said jury selection for the former administrators will take place in February.

The home's 173 patients have been relocated to other facilities such as county-controlled Centre Crest, 502 E. Howard St. in Bellefonte.
