What a shot!
Shot putter Hunter breaks Complex record, qualifies for IC4A, NCAAs at 62'9"

Collegian Sports Writer

Shot putter C.J. Hunter broke the Indoor Sports Complex shot put record with a toss of 62'9" in the first meet of the men's indoor track season Saturday. Hunter had set the old shot put record of 61'1" last year.

With his record throw, Hunter also qualified for the IC4A and NCAA Championships. Hunter was not the only Lion to qualify for the IC4As; Doug Walter and Aidan O'Reilly also qualified in the one-mile race.

O'Reilly won the race in 4:09 and Walter finished second with 4:09.9.

"I was really pleased," Walter said of his second-place finish. "I knew Aidan was in good shape and he proved it."

The competition for the Lions was thin because many schools are not yet in session after the semester break. Most of the competition came from the Lions' own teammates and from scattered individual athletes either unattached from a school or bits and pieces of other teams.

Coach Harry Groves said that because of its size a runner does not use the track at the Indoor Sports complex to qualify for major meets, but to help improve competition skills.

"There's enough foundation to develop into something good," Groves said.

Groves added that the important thing now is to keep the athletes on their feet and training, get them into good condition and move on to the later more important meets.

"Definitely for the first meet of the year we got a lot accomplished," Walter said.

Other top finishers in the meet were Kevin Johnson of Capton's Community College, who placed first in both the 440-yard run (50.0) and the 55- meter dash (6.48).

For the Lions, Ricardo Hall finished first in both the long jump and triple jump, jumping 23'½" and 49'9", respectively. Robert Noely won the high jump with 6'6" and Meson Ternay won the pole vault event with 16 feet.

The winner of the 55-meter hurdles was Greg Rogers (7.72) and Derik Ferrel won the 220-yard dash. The 600-yard run was won by Jon Strange (1:13.94) and Joe Stegbauer won the 880-yard run (1:56.64). Andy Scott won the 1,000-yard run (2:19) and Steve Brown placed first in the the two-mile run (8:57.9). Hunter went on the win the 35-pound shot put with a toss of 53' 1".

Next week's meet for the Lions consists of competition from Pitt, Ohio State and Tennessee. Walter said Pitt and Tennessee have good sprint and middle distance teams. He said the Lions' field events will be their strength.
