Letter to the Editor
Keep Fusco Brothers
In response to the letter, "Shape up, Collegian" (Collegian, Jan. 12), I'd just like to say that I enjoy and value my exposure to The Fusco Brothers on the funny page. It presents a different type of comic-strip humor -- a cynical, subtle kind which, in its own unique way, entertainingly reflects our day- to-day lives. A striking quality of The Fusco Brothers is that Axel, the wolverine, possesses a far sharper wit than any of the human beings in the strip. I concede that the brothers themselves are dreary and boring people -- but that's why I laugh at them! Also, the artwork is not "ugly." It's functional, much in the same way The Far Side's is. The idea of a comic strip is to be funny, not to display timeless aesthetic value. If you like Calvin and Hobbes, you can subscribe to a paper that runs it and I won't mind. But, if you "can't imagine anyone preferring The Fusco Brothers to Calvin and Hobbes," then I am simply beyond your imagination.
