Recognize Blue Band
We were pleased to read your Holiday Bowl section on Jan. 8. Being members of the Blue Band, we had the opportunity to travel to San Diego and experience the game first hand. While we can't speak for everyone, I'm sure it's safe to say that the band thoroughly enjoyed the game. Upon reading Mark Wogenrich's article, "Wow . . .!" (Collegian, Jan. 8), two thoughts came to mind. The first being that the article was creative and well written. On the other hand, we were dismayed to find no mention of the Blue Band. There was mention of the 1,500 high school band members as well as the (Brigham Young University) band. While it is well and good that you mentioned the opposing school's band, we find it in rather poor taste that you omit any references to the Penn State Blue Band. While one of the band's priorities is to provide an entertaining half-time show, our main objective is to provide support for the team and promote school spirit. Throughout the year, the band has provided support when the team has needed it; many times inspiring the crowd's enthusiasm. The Holiday Bowl was no exception. From the outstanding pre-game performance to the great job done on the half-time show, to the end of the game, the Blue Band never let up. Through numerous playings of "Let's Go State" and other school songs, the band helped to keep the Penn State fans' enthusiasm going. It is because of these facts that we can not understand the Collegian's failure to mention the Blue Band. It is rather difficult for us to understand how the newspaper, which is supposed to represent Penn State, its students and its organizations, can fail to make mention of an important part of the University. We hope that omissions such as these can be avoided in the future.
