James moved from county prison

Collegian Staff Writer

Undergraduate Student Government Senate Vice President J. David James, charged with taking more than $800 from the USG office, was moved from Centre County Prison to Northampton County Prison Friday, a prison spokesman familiar with the case said.

James, of 228 S. Allen St., was arrested by University Police Services Jan. 7 for failing to appear in the Northampton County Courthouse on theft-by-deception and forgery charges filed in Northampton County, according to court records.

Although Centre County District Justice Robert Shoff ordered James released on his own recognizance, Northampton County Court had put a detainer on James.

In Centre County, James was arraigned on charges of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property when he allegedly took $570 in cash and checks between Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 from the USG office in the HUB and deposited them in a commercial account entitled, "United Sanguinary Gladiators," in care of James at People's National Bank, 117 S. Allen St.

James has also been charged with the Nov. 21 theft of $280 from the USG office. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 24 in Centre County after Shoff granted a two-week continuance so that the defense and prosecution could prepare their cases.

University Police Officer Mark Stringer said he linked the thefts to James when a University student received notice that her check bounced when James tried to cash it. The check was part of a group of checks totaling $280 reported stolen on Nov. 21.

Stringer learned that People's National Bank was to receive the money. A search of James' apartment turned up a passbook and four deposit slips from the bank, Stringer said.

The USG Senate suspended James from his post, Senate President Ron Marlow said last week.

Marlow said that under suspension status, James can be fully reinstated as USG Senate vice president at a later date.
