Letter to the Editor
Shape up, Collegian
I have two qualms to discuss which have no relation to each other. First, congratulations on your move from Carnegie Building. I'm sure the whole population of Penn State is buzzing with gossip about it (I know someone came up to me and said "Hey! Did you here the Collegian moved from Carnegie Building? Isn't that great?"), but now could you concentrate your efforts on more important things? For example: How about getting rid of The Fusco Brothers and putting in Calvin & Hobbes? Now there's an idea! I can't imagine anyone preferring The Fusco Brothers over Calvin & Hobbes. The artwork in the former is simply ugly and not a pleasant sight to read. Calvin & Hobbes, on the other hand, is simply the superior comic strip because of its wit and humor which appeals to the kid in all of us. My second complaint is about the special Holiday Bowl section you had in your first 1990 edition. You did a good job with the articles. But the photographs left something to be desired. You failed to include one entity: The Blue Band. You had a picture of a guy surfing with the caption "Even in December, surfing is a Southern California pastime." No kidding! If the person was one of the football players doing the surfing, then that would have been interesting . You also had a picture of people dancing to "La Bamba." So? Were the players there? Who else watched this amazing spectacle? To me, that didn't mean a thing. You should have had a picture of the Blue Band in its traditional "PSU" formation, or a close-up of one of the trumpet players during halftime. That's OK though. The Blue Band always gets screwed when it comes to media coverage. Why should that change now?
