The fans who came to Rec Hall last night to watch the hyped rivalry between Top 10 wrestling powers Oklahoma and Penn State saw only a junior varsity victory over Bucknell.
The match was cancelled because Oklahoma's wrestling team was grounded in Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., by thick fog. The cancellation was the first since 1903, Assistant Athletic Director Rich Lucas said over the intercom during last night's JV match.
Lucas said that the refunding policy for last night's tickets will be announced later in the week.
"I think I feel worse now than I did last year when they beat us," assistant coach John Fritz said. "I'm frustrated, as I'm sure all the wrestlers are."
Peter Horst (18-3), the Lions' 142-pounder, was particularly disappointed. Horst was set to face Joe Reynolds (14-0), the No. 1 wrestler in that class, according to the latest rankings by the Amateur Wrestling News.
"That's the biggest disappointment for me," Horst said. "I was really looking forward to wrestling him. I was real hyped up."
The United Express which carried the Oklahoma team arrived in Dulles at 2 p.m. and, after a brief layover, was slated to leave at 4:46. Fog grounded all outgoing and incoming flights, which also prevented Penn State from arranging a charter to pick up the stranded Sooners.
"We're ticked off at them because they shouldn't have scheduled it like that," Fritz said. "I realize it was an act of God that they couldn't get there, but it was their own poor scheduling."
The flight was to arrive in at 5:05, giving the Sooners only three hours before match time.
"You just don't do that," Fritz said.
"I'm very disappointed," Horst said. "I mean, we spent all week preparing to go up against this team, everyone was really wrestling well and we were ready."
