The Greek system's semester of programs begins tonight with the Interfraternity Council's spring rush in the HUB Ballroom.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., representatives from 56 fraternities will inform interested students about the different purposes, philanthropies and activities of various fraternities, said Levi Downs, IFC membership chairman.
Kelly Ayotte, Panhellenic Council president, said Panhel has no formal rush plans for the spring semester. Sororities may have informal rush on their own during this period, but she said she was unaware of any that are sponsoring rush.
A spokesperson for the National Pan-Hellenic Council could not be reached for information yesterday afternoon.
Fraternity rushees will have a chance to register with the fraternities which interest them, Downs said.
On Wednesday and Thursday of next week rushees will be able to visit fraternities during a period called open house. During that time, fraternity houses are open from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and rushees may meet the members, the adviser and view the houses.
For the following two weeks, fraternities and rushees engage in functions such as dinners, football games and movie nights, Downs said. These functions and all rush functions must be non-alcoholic according to the IFC by-laws, he said.
Downs characterized the rush period as a worthwhile experience for interested students.
"Even if you don't join a fraternity, it's an opportunity to meet people," Downs said.
