The recycling contract formalized at yesterday's Centre County commissioners' meeting will allow the Centre County Solid Waste Authority to further develop the region's booming recycling program, a spokeswoman for the commissioners said.
The contract will include Centre County and three local municipalities -- State College Borough, Ferguson Township and Harris Township, said Susan Veneziano, deputy chief clerk for the commissioners.
The commissioners also approved an agreement with the state Department of Environmental Resources to spray 1,780 acres in the county for gypsy moths. The county is contributing $7,120 and the state will fund the remainder of the cost, Veneziano said.
Spraying costs $4 per acre, she said.
In other news, the commissioners passed an agreement with Garden Technology, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, to supply monitoring devices to the county probation offices.
The devices will be used to monitor individuals who have been placed on in-house detention, Veneziano said. Ankle bracelets are worn by individuals under detention, and the monitoring device is triggered when they go beyond a designated point, she said.
The program costs $7 per unit per day.
