Members of the Graduate Student Association raised questions last night about a recent decision by top administrators requiring graduate assistants and newly enrolled international students to purchase insurance.
The University decided at the end of last semester to pay for 80 percent of single coverage for a graduate assistant. International students who are not graduate assistants or are not sponsored by their country must pay the entire amount and support their dependants. The University's insurance policy requirement goes into effect fall semester 1990.
Frank Miskiel, GSA treasurer, asked if the University would be willing to pay the same dollar amount for his insurance coverage that they pay for the University's policy.
GSA President Ken Martin said the University will still offer the U.S. Guardian policy, currently available to students, but said he doesn't think the University will pay for outside insurances. Students will possibly pay about $70 of the total $350 a year.
Bob Gould, a member of the Committee on Graduate Student and Faculty Affairs, said the committee discussed the health insurance issue at the end of last semester. Gould said they decided insurance should be mandatory for international students and graduate assistants but should not be mandatory for graduates.
The Committee on University Student Insurance, which will implement the proposals, will consider requiring all graduates to have insurance, Martin said.
Other GSA members questioned the coverage of the University's policy.
Abbas Aminmansour, International Student Council president, said the insurance committees reviewed policies from different companies and found the U.S. Guardian plan to be the best.
Martin said the policy would not be considered an employee benefit since graduate assistants are not officially called University employees.
He added that the insurance as a benefit would be given to all full- and part--time University employees.
Top University administrators involved in the decision were: Executive Vice President William C. Richardson, Associate Vice President for Business and Operations James M. Wagner, Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School C. L. Hosler and Senior Vice President for Financial Operations Steve Garban.
