NEWS
 
The Center for Women Students will start this semester in a newly expanded and renovated office suite while its priorities of combating sexual assault and improving campus safety remain the same.
 
A University student has been missing since the end of finals week and University Police Services is continuing attempts to locate him.
 
Executive Vice President and Provost William C. Richardson -- a possible successor for the retiring University president -- is one of two finalists for the presidency at Johns Hopkins University.
 
Suzy Gill, a Penn State graduate, sat in Thompson Hall on Saturday with her freshman year roommate and another good friend reminiscing about their college days.
 
State College Borough Council will soon review a fair housing ordinance that may be acceptable to most members of the community -- something they have been trying to do for nearly 15 years.
 
Beginning this coming fall all graduate assistants must have health insurance and international students enrolled after fall 1990 must provide insurance for themselves and their dependents.
 
Day's Inn, the former Sheraton Penn State, claims to be less concerned about glamour and glitter as it now aims to attract the middle-income visitor to State College.
 
While students were away for the holiday break, the State College Borough Council unanimously passed the 1990 borough budget with increases in real estate taxes and garbage fees.
 
 
SPORTS
 
With only two days to prepare for Saturday night's game against No. 10 Virginia, the women's basketball team was given its first homework assignment of the new semester. For the first time, the players were given the scouting reports of the other team to study on their own.
 
Freddie Barnes scored a career high of 21 points against Massachusetts Saturday night, but his best wasn't enough as the men's basketball team lost, 64-52, and closed its holiday road trip with a 2-4 record.
 
When news of Penn State joining the Big 10 Conference broke during finals week, surprise and disbelief were the common reactions among Penn State fans. It was no different for the coaches of those teams that will be affected.
 
On Tuesday, Dec. 19, the day Penn State reshaped the future of its athletic program, University Park was quiet. Campus had become a ghost town following the conclusion of final exams the previous Saturday.
 
Penn State's Mike Bevilacqua won the 150-pound class at the Sunshine Open in Tampa, Fla., with a 7-4 decision of Tim Tousighnant of Augsburg College. Three other Lions also placed at the open, held Dec. 28-29.
 
SAN DIEGO -- On the first play from scrimmage Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer completed a simple out pattern to receiver Jeff Frandsen. Frandsen shook Hernon Henderson's tackle and stretched what should have been an eight-yard completion for 26 yards.
 
SAN DIEGO -- It was the type of play that one could only dream would happen. The play that every little boy makes in his backyard over and over again.
 
When word leaked that Penn State might join the Big 10, most people thought Rose Bowl. By the time Penn State officially accepted the Big 10's invitation on Dec. 19, people speculated about benefits for the men's basketball program, especially television revenue.
 
SAN DIEGO -- Lost in the shuffle of the big, big Holiday Bowl plays were some strong performances from other Penn State players.
 
SAN DIEGO -- General Dynamics provided the pre-game ceremonies, complete with the largest United States flag in the world courtesy of Keeton Construction Co.. Halftime was brought to the fans by USAir.
 
SAN DIEGO -- At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the media were asked to choose an offensive and defensive player of the Sea World Holiday Bowl.
 
SAN DIEGO -- Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, welcome to the 1989 Sea World Holiday Bowl, the zaniest show on earth. We've got dancing clowns and knife jugglers and two-point conversions on two-point conversions.
 
SAN DIEGO -- With the score 41-39 and 2:34 remaining on the game clock, Ty was looking to tie the Holiday Bowl.
 
After Virginia lost to the women's basketball team, 90-77 Saturday night, Lady Cavaliers coach Debbie Ryan said she was looking to double team some of the Lady Lions to stop scoring machine Susan Robinson.
 
Ben Bouma, Andy McLaughlin and John O'Connor each scored a pair of goals as the ice hockey club won at St. Bonaventure yesterday, 9-3.
 
SAN DIEGO -- It's amazing Dave Daniels could breathe, let alone see a football coming at him, let alone catch it. BYU cornerback Tony Crutchfield was covering Daniels like a fishing net.
