Letter to the Editor
Unfair criticism

I would like to publicly address Mr. Bob Bowen on his letter to the editor, Oct. 25.

I was very offended when I heard that your nine-member group (membership of the Penn State American Family Association as of Oct. 16) wanted to rid this campus of "offensive material" like Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler magazines. Thank you very much for speaking up for me and the other 30,000 students here.

First of all, the report that you have been circulating about child pornography in Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler magazines is outdated.

The report uses examples that are nearly a generation old. Many things can change in a generation, especially misuse of children in pornography.

Second, once you rid this campus' post offices of these magazines, you will have to enter the library. Playboy is a real literary magazine but you find it offensive and might attempt to pull it from our library. Is book burning too far behind?

Third, your report seems to be a farce. The fact (as you have expressed) that anyone of these "offensive" periodicals has been found at the homes of sexual criminals leading you to conclude that this contributes to their crimes is asinine.

It could also be concluded that these magazines are purchased by these mentally unstable people as a way to calm (and not encourage) their sexual urges. This could not possibly be a conclusion in your mind because it makes these magazines BENEFICIAL!

Lastly, if these magazines offend you, you don't have to see them. They are not displayed at the post office for people who get offended by the sight of such things, like yourself.

Don't worry about me, Mr. Bowen. I can look after myself very well. I went to college, in part, because I was tired of Mommy and Daddy watching my every move. But thank you, anyway, for your concern.
