Letter to the Editor
Age before beauty

The Daily Collegian covered the IM cross-country meet with its usual lack of insight and knowledge. How come the frat men got a whole article, the dorm men got a major part of an article, the grad/staff men got two sentences and the women and open runners got ignored?

Even a casual reader would have noticed that the grad/staff winner was faster than the dorm winner and the dorm winner was faster that the frat winner. I would think the faster times and tight team race in the grad/staff race rated more than two sentences.

As for the women, the reporter must have been asleep not to notice Evelyn Ellis's fine 20:41 in the 5000 meters. I believe he was afraid that printing her time would emasculate any man who ran a slower race.

Furthermore, if the vaunted frat guys had run with the grad/staff guys, they would have been victims of a merciless thrashing by ancient and nerdy men, or ancient and nerdy at least to them and their camp followers.

Furthermore, I fear they may be acquiring false delusions of possessing vast amounts of machismo and virility. The only things they have on us geezers are the rude animal health of youth, full heads of hair, colorful nicknames and an entire article in The Daily Collegian.

Next time there is an event of this nature, I hope the paper remembers the silent majority of the women, the elderly (those over 30 in State College), and the open competitors who do not live in either dorms or large brick pagodas with funky letters on them. We are Penn State, too!
