Despite the Undergraduate Student Government Senate's attempt to impeach President Janyne Althaus Tuesday night, most senators and executives are trying to pick up the pieces.
"I would hope after all of this, we're able to move on," said town Senator Don Bowman. "This gives us an opportunity to start anew to go ahead and help the students. This issue will not come up again. This issue is buried."
On Tuesday night the senate voted not to impeach Althaus, although she admitted she had lied to the senate about how she selected nominees for the University Board of Trustees' Presidential Search Committee.
When questioned by the senate about naming nominees, Althaus claimed she completed all the interviews at the same time. Tuesday night, she admitted she had interviewed two finalists after she submitted nominations.
"I think relations will improve," said USG Public Information Officer Wendy Goldstein. "I've worked with senators in the past. If we can't get past what happened everyone is being pretty petty."
"We have no choice but to work with the president if we want to have any semblance of a productive year," said town Senator Ron Marlow.
Some senators, however, said they did not believe relations could be repaired.
"I think we'll be able to work together when we have to. But seeing Janyne's attitude, I don't see how we'll be able to get over our differences, " said West Halls Senator Mark Stewart, author of the impeachment motion. "I won't work with them unless I have to."
Some senators said they did not think the senate would try to impeach Althaus again.
"I don't see a motion for impeachment ever coming up again with this senate and this president, because I think after Tuesday's (meeting) problems were worked out. We realized (that) to accomplish anything, we all have to work together," Bowman said.
Althaus could not be reached for comment last night.
The USG representative to the search committee will be the only undergraduate student involved in the selection of a replacement for University President Bryce Jordan, who retires Aug. 31, 1990.
Some students interviewed yesterday in the HUB were unaware of the senate's attempt to impeach the USG president.
"Who's Janyne Althaus?" said Dan Goldman (sophomore-pre-law). "I don't know anything about it."
Added Steve Potucek (junior-accounting) "I have no idea about USG, about who she is or what she is."
