Presidential committee announced

Collegian Staff Writer

Faculty, staff, students and alumni comprising the presidential search and screen committee were announced yesterday, marking completion of the first step in finding the University's next leader.

University Board of Trustees President J. Lloyd Huck named the 15 people from all sections of Penn State to aid in the trustees' search for a new president. Bryce Jordan is scheduled to retire Aug. 31, 1990.

Search committee chairman Thomas Merritt said the appointees met yesterday for about two hours to organize their plans.

First on the agenda is developing an advertisement for the presidential position, to be released as soon as possible, he said, adding that the search committee will meet again next Thursday.

Merritt is also past chairman of the University Faculty Senate and a professor of animal science.

Other members of the search committee are:

-- Anne Petersen, dean of the College of Health and Human Development. She was chosen to fill the search committee's slot for a dean.

-- George Andrews, Evan Pugh Professor of Mathematics and faculty member.

-- Robert Arbuckle, campus executive officer at the New Kensington campus, chosen for his post as a campus executive officer.

-- Dwight Davis, associate professor of medicine and faculty member.

-- Archie McDonnell, Environmental Resources Research Institute director, professor of civil engineering and faculty member.

-- David Palermo, associate dean for research and graduate studies of the College of Liberal Arts and faculty member.

-- Laura Karkowski-Shuman, graduate student.

-- Perry J. Sternberg, undergraduate student and Council of Commonwealth Student Government coordinator.

-- James Wagner, associate vice president for business and operations, chosen for his administrative status.

In addition, five more University officials hold positions on the search committee by virtue of their posts within the University. They are:

-- Janet Atwood, chairwoman of the Faculty Senate.

-- Cynthia Baldwin, president of the Penn State Alumni Association.

-- Peter Deines, chairman-elect of the senate.

-- James Moeser, chairman of the Council of Academic Deans and dean of the College of Arts and Architecture.

-- Robert Secor, secretary to the senate.

Search committee members will play a major role in the search for Jordan's successor, Huck said in a prepared statement.

The committee will seek out applications and nominations for the University presidency and publicize the criteria and qualifications determined by the trustees. The group will also screen and review candidates, but will not conduct interviews. A list of five to 10 qualified candidates will then be submitted to the trustee selection committee by March 1, 1990.

The search committee will serve directly under the trustee presidential selection committee, which is made up of 11 trustees who will ultimately recommend a final presidential nominee to the full board.

Trustees on the selection committee are chairpersons of the board's standing, advisory and special committees, the chairman of the Campaign for Penn State, the three past board presidents and Huck.

Both the trustee selection committee and the presidential search committee will serve until the new president assumes office.
