Kenneth J. Powers irrational letter of Oct. 17 criticizing the American Family Association perfectly demonstrates his paranoia and ignorance. Powers criticizes the American Family Association's pro-family, pro-Judeo-Christian ethics stance and hides behind the claim that his "free speech" is being impinged upon by having child pornography illegal!
For him to say that the Child Protection and Obscenity Act, which illegalizes the sale, filming, molestation, and murder of children in pornography, is "repression of free speech" clearly shows an attitude similar to that held by sadistic individuals in need of help.
Powers also suggested a boycott of stores selling Bibles to counter his valuable "free speech" right to child pornography form being taken away from him. This illuminates a woeful ignorance of who proposed and passed our Bill of Rights, which encompassed freedom of speech as well as freedom of religion from state control.
Our founding fathers who sacrificed their livelihood in the War for Independence and wrote our Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, were primarily Bible-believing Christians.
Congress regularly declared praises to Jesus Christ. Case in point being the Thanksgiving Declaration of Congress written on Nov. 1, 1777 while meeting in York, Pa.:
"That at one time and with one voice, the good people may express ... their humble and earnest supplication that it may please God through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and blot [their sins] out of remembrance ... and to prosper the means of religion, for the promotion and enlargement of that kingdom which confideth 'IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, PEACE, AND JOY IN THE HOLY GHOST.'... By order of Congress, HENRY LAURENS, President."
Mr. Powers, it was Christians who invented your precious right to free speech, not right to child pornography, and who established the longest- standing government in existence today.
It was God-fearing American families who established this nation and are still its backbone. These are the families who live by the Judeo-Christian ethic and understand that responsibility to others supersedes in importance of the fulfillment of vile and selfish lusts.
It was not child porn promoters, or Collegian editors or columnists such as Bob Ramos, who revile and profane Jesus Christ's good and holy name, who established the freedoms you hide behind. It was God fearing American families. Free speech is a Judeo-Christian ethic!
The only danger of censorship comes from those who want to ignore the facts of history and censor out any moral responsibilities that would endanger the fulfillment of their self-centered personal gratification.
I'm glad to be a member of the American Family Association. Familyphobia and blatant stupidity have no place at Penn State.
