LGSA to sponsor key speaker for student action conference

The Lesbian and Gay Student Alliance made plans to sponsor a workshop and speaker for the upcoming Student Action Union Conference during Monday night's meeting.

The conference is scheduled to take place Nov. 4, 5 and 6, and speakers will address issues of democracy on campus as they deal with racism, sexism and homophobia, said LGSA member Brian McKernan.

LGSA will be holding a workshop with the Gay and Lesbian Association from the University of Pittsburgh to share strategies for dealing with gay issues, he said.

The organization will also be sponsoring the key note speaker, gay rights activist Sabrina Sojourner.

McKernan said about 150 students from other eastern universities are expected to attend.

Jeff McCarty, co-director of LGSA's political group, said members of LGSA are planning to meet with the Alliance Christian Fellowship, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and the Christian Student Fellowship.

McCarty said members from those groups will make plans for setting up a panel discussion about the issues brought up by a poster sponsored by the Christian organizations.

LGSA also made plans to bring gay movie series to campus over the summer.
