Battered booters to host Red Raiders

After this past weekend, things can only get better for the soccer team.

This past weekend the Lions (4-5-2) dropped games to William&Mary and Old Dominion, being shut out for a record-breaking fifth time by W&M. The squad also and lost its main offensive weapon, co-captain Jan Skorpen, to an ankle injury.

Skorpen is the leading scorer on the team with five goals and two assists.

Tonight the struggling Lions hope to reverse their course as they take on Shippensburg at 7:15 on Jeffrey Field.

"I think we'll see a different team on the field," defender Einar Dahle said. "The attitude and effort is there."

Other injuries suffered in the past weekend were co-captain Ted Gillen (sprained ankle), Eric Friberg (bruised shoulder) and Einar Dahle (pulled quad muscle). Gillen is questionable for tonight.

Players still nursing injuries include Danny Kelly and Daniel Gil.

Even with the injuries, the Lions are confident that younger players can fill the spots adequately.

"The guys coming off the bench have to pull their load with the injuries," Gillen said. "And this weekend they did. They really picked up the slack. Steve Sergi played a good game, along with Steve Thomas, Matt Woolley, and Nigel Sparks."

Even with the losses and the shutouts, the Lions, who have only lost once this season on Jeffrey Field, have confidence that the current situation will change.

"We haven't gotten the results were looking for," forward Steve Frantz said. "We're just looking forward to the remaining games."

"I still think we haven't see a better team than us," Gillen added.

The banged-up Lions are 16-0 against Shippensburg (8-1), but the players are not taking them lightly.

"We haven't been scoring many goals, which makes us highly susceptible to an upset," Gillen said.

"Shippensburg is a team we should beat," Dahle said. "But there are no easy games for us right now. Whatever team is on the field we have to take seriously."

Although not exactly a soccer powerhouse, with only one loss this season, Shippensburg is looking to break its losing streak against the Lions.

"We kind of look forward to playing there, on a good field and under the lights," Shippensburg coach Tony Tuglisi said. "We never beat them, but we expect to (tonight)."
