Administrator hears LGSA concerns, needs

Collegian Staff Writer

The Lesbian and Gay Student Alliance continued to relate concerns about issues pertinent to their organization with Robert Dunham, vice president of Academic Services, last night during the group's political meeting.

Some of the issues they discussed include:

Adding a sexual orientation clause to the University's non-discrimination policy.

Developing a video to help educate students, faculty and staff about the problems of intolerance against gay and lesbian students, ethnic and racial minorities and women.

Receiving sincere support and communication from the University administration.

Brian McKernan, member of LGSA, said a video developed to present different minority groups to incoming freshmen during the Freshman Testing and Counseling Program did not deal with gay and lesbian students and failed to portray the problems of tolerance at the University.

In response Dunham said, "I think we have a big problem in this community, not only to train students but faculty and staff as well. This could be a good suggestion."

However, Dunham said the present policy on the sexual orientation would remain.

"I don't think the door is shut permanently. But I think the answer today is no. We are not going to include sexual orientation in the discrimination policy," he added.

One LGSA member expressed concern that lesbian and gay issues are either ignored or are addressed only half-heartedly by the University.

Dunham said, "Sometimes our response may not be yes. But I think it is important to keep the communication process going."

During last night's social meeting the group ratified a new constitution and elected interim officers for the steering committee, its governing body, until the Undergraduate Student Government Supreme Court approves the new charter.

The new political co-directors are Lora Nase and Jeff McCarty. The new social co-directors did not wish to be named.

After the constitution is ratified by the USG Supreme Court the group will elect permanent officers.
