Council veto override vote delayed

Further action by State College Borough Council on Mayor Arnold Addison's veto of the controversial Fair Housing Ordinance has been postponed until July 31.

The council's regular meeting, scheduled for tonight, was delayed two weeks because of the death of councilwoman Jean McManis' husband, said Council President Gary Wiser.

Addison vetoed the Fair Housing Ordinance July 3 after council narrowly adopted a federal version of the legislation by a 4-3 vote. The council will need a 5-2 vote to override the veto.

The vetoed Fair Housing Ordinance parallels existing state and federal housing regulations.

Addison vetoed the ordinance July 11 -- as promised at the July 3 meeting -- because it does not provide protection for residents on the basis of sexual preference, age, marital status or source of income.

"If they do override the ordinance it will become law without my signature," the mayor said last week.

Under borough law, the council must vote at the next council meeting following a veto by the mayor, Wiser said.

At the July 31 meeting, the council will also consider voting on Centre County's mandatory model recycling ordinance. If passed, the law will go into effect Sept. 1.
