Sorority life explained during recruitment week

Collegian Staff Writer

Women students interested in learning about sorority life can do so this week during Panhellenic Council's Rush Recruitment Week, said Caroline Durrell, rush coordinator.

Women may register for fall rush this until Friday in the HUB basement between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Durrell said. The fee for registration is $10, she added.

The highlight of the week's activities is a mixer which will take place from 7 to 9 Wednesday night in Pollock Rec Room, Durrell said. Sorority women will be on hand to answer questions about sorority life and speakers and a slide show will provide information about sororities, Durrell said.

Panhellenic Council President Kelly Ayotte said the mixer is being held in Pollock to provide greater accessability for freshman women but all interested women are welcome to attend.

The theme for this year's fall rush is "Rush 1989 - Find Yourself in It" and will begin August 28.

Kelli Spicer (sophomore-secondary education), a member of Delta Zeta, said women at Penn State can find a sorority they like because they have the opportunity to be exposed to many sororities instead of just a few. She said that although rush is hectic, she has benefited from being involved with a sorority.

"I feel that it makes a campus as big as Penn State a little smaller," said Spicer, adding that since she lives off campus, sorority involvement has also helped her be more active on campus.

Tamara Myers (sophomore-health planning administration), also a member of Delta Zeta, said meeting people at a large university is harder for those who are not part of a central group. She agreed that being a sorority member is a way to make friends.

"Basically, it's just to meet a whole lot of new people," she said.

Myers said that being in a sorority is a commitment, leaving her with little time for other activities. But she said it has not affected her studies because she has learned how to budget her time.

"I've always been an organized person," she said.
