  • Rockview inmate found dead; official calls incident suicide: An inmate in the State Correctional Institution at Rockview was found hanging in his cell Friday morning in an apparent suicide, a prison official said.

Leslie English Craig, 29, of North Wales, was pronounced dead at 9:30 Friday morning at the Centre Community Hospital after attempts at cardio-pulmonary resuscitation by Rockview staff failed to revive him, prison spokesman Jack Allar said.

Prison authorities investigating the incident suspect no foul play, Allar said.

Craig was sentenced April 7, 1982, in Montgomery County to four to 10 years for robbery and kidnapping. He had been at Rockview since March of 1983, Allar said.

  • Man flees Route 322 in car after demanding woman's ring: Police are investigating the robbery of a Bellefonte woman's engagement ring taken Friday on Route 322.

A 21-year-old woman had stopped to check her vehicle on Route 322 in Port Matilda when an unidentified man stopped his vehicle and demanded she give him the ring she was wearing, Philipsburg state police said.

The woman gave him her engagement ring and the man fled in his car, police said.

  • Fight in borough apartment sends PSU student to hospital: A University student was treated for an eye injury after a fracas in the Fiesta House apartment building Saturday night, State College Bureau of Police Services said.

Anthony Seguin, 22, was treated and released from Centre Community Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

Seguin was attempting to suppress violence on the third floor when he was reportedly struck in the eye by John DeGiacomo, 20, 825 Bellaire Ave., police said. Twelve men had gathered on the third floor and two were allegedly fighting, police said.

DeGiacomo was charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct and harrassment, police said. His preliminary hearing will be held on April 12.

  • Woman in stacks of Pattee reports indecent exposure: A man reportedly exposed himself Friday to a woman in the seventh-level stacks of Pattee Library, University officials said yesterday.

University Police Services reported the man had his pants down and was masturbating when he walked up to the woman as she was studying at one of the carrels located in the stacks.

The woman ignored the man at first, police said, but he continued to masturbate, so she left the area. He was gone when police arrived at the scene.

The suspect is described as a white male in his late teens or early twenties, about 5 feet 9 inches tall with dark hair. He wore a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

  • 2 women injured in accident on campus; unborn baby safe: Two motorists, one a pregnant woman, were injured Saturday afternoon during a two-car collision on Shortlidge Road near Eisenhower Auditorium authorities said yesterday.

The two -- Judith Zimmerman, 46, of Centre Hall, and Fujiko Takia Signs, 30, of Boalsburg -- were treated and released from the Centre Community Hospital Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said Signs, who is 5 1/2 months pregnant, complained of pain in her left side after the incident. But her baby was apparently uninjured, officials said.

University Police Services reported the accident occurred at 5:10 p.m. when Signs, who was attempting to turn onto Shortlidge Road from Parking Lot Orange G, traveled into the path of Zimmerman, traveling west.

Signs told police an unidentified driver motioned for her to pull onto the roadway before the accident occurred.

Signs was cited for failing to yield when entering a roadway, police said.

Both cars received major damages and were towed from the scene.

  • Fig tree missing from cinema recovered in local apartment: Authorities this weekend recovered a fig tree taken Friday night from a local movie theater.

The $200 tree, reported taken from Cinema Five, 116 Heister St., was found hours later in an apartment in Penn Towers, 255 E. Beaver Ave., the State College Bureau of Police Services said. A display stand valued at $75, also taken from the cinema, was not found, police said.

No charges were filed in the incident.

  • No freedom from press for student in tabloid-filled room: One morning paper apparently wasn't enough.

A University student found his dormitory room partially filled with newspapers early yesterday morning, officials said.

Jeff Seigel, 24 Atherton, left his room at 8 Saturday evening and returned about four hours later to find it filled with crumpled newspapers, University Police Services said.

"When I opened the door, it was like a solid block of paper all the way up to the ceiling," Seigel said yesterday.

The room was three-quarters full of copies of the New York Daily News, he said.

Police said the room was not damaged in the incident, and no suspects have been identified.

  • Bellefonte resident arraigned in supply company burglary: A Bellefonte man was charged Friday with the theft of two ladders reported missing several months ago from an area building supply company, authorities said yesterday.

Alan B. Robinson, 19, was charged by the Rockview state police and Spring Township Police Department with theft, conspiracy and receiving stolen property, according to a state police press release.

He was arraigned before District Justice Clifford H. Yorks and is free on his own recognizance pending a preliminary hearing at 10 Tuesday morning, police said.

The charges stem from the alleged February theft of two ladders, totaling $800 in value, from T.M.I. Builders of Pleasant Gap.

Accident on rainy highway spares S.C. man from injury

A State College man escaped injury Friday when his car skidded and struck a utility pole on State Road 192 in Gregg Township, officials said yesterday.

Todd Hastings, 29, was traveling westbound Friday afternoon when he lost control of his 1988 Ford Escort and struck a pole on the eastbound road shoulder about three miles west of Madisonburg, Rockview state police said. Police said the road was slippery from rain that fell early in the day.

Hastings' car was moderately damaged, police said.

  • Two shoppers stopped short after collision at mail entrance: Two cars collided at the Nittany Mall entrance and sustained moderate damage Sunday, State College Bureau of Police said.

Janet Hartman, 1535 N. Atherton St., was attempting to turn her car east onto Route 26 from the west entrance of the Nittany Mall, when she struck a car driven by Brian Niemeyer of Newtown Square.

Niemeyer, traveling east on Route 26, was attempting to turn left into the mall entrance, police said.
