Weekend tourney on tap for spikers

Collegian Sports Writer

Forget the Battle for Seattle, this weekend it is the Showdown in Elizabethtown for the men's volleyball team.

The Lions will compete in the Dutch Country Classic, which is scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday. Joining Penn State (11-9) in Elizabethtown will be No. 4 USC, No. 10 George Mason and Rutgers Newark, which defeated the Lions in three games at the Golden Dome Classic.

USC and George Mason will battle it out at 7 tomorrow night, with the Lions taking on Rutgers-Newark at 9. The finals are set for 8 p.m. Sunday, with the consolation game to be played at 6.

After avenging a loss to GMU last weekend, the Lions will be looking to do the same thing against the Knights.

"I'm really excited to play them again," Jorge Perez said. "They beat us in three last time, and they were really cocky."

"I'm really looking forward to it because last time we played them we were without Robert (Pierce) and Chris (Chase)," setter Scott Miller said. "I thought we could have beaten them even without them. With these guys I really want to take it to them, and show we're better than them."

If Penn State wins, Coach Tom Peterson and his squad would like to take on USC in the final.

"If Mason beats them because they're playing better, that's okay," Peterson said. "But I'd like to see USC because it might be them or one of the other (California) teams that we see in the NCAA finals."

"It's key for us to play USC, because if we do make it to the Final Four they'll probably be one of the teams there," Charlie Bertran said. "As many times as we play them it's better for us."

If the Patriots upset the Trojans and the Lions beat the Knights, it will set up the fifth meeting this season between the Eastern powers. Even though Peterson is tired of playing the Patriots, the players are not.

"We expect to see them in the Easterns," Miller said. "I like to see those guys because it's really an intense and emotional match, and that's the most fun."

"I think it's a challenge every time," Bertran said. "They beat us in five, we beat them in four. Who knows what's going to happen next?"

Peterson said the Lions have not looked good in practice, probably because of the letdown after beating GMU last weekend. Again, the players disagree.

"Right now we're definitely on an upswing," Perez said. "In practice we've been looking pretty good."

"I thinking we're looking pretty good, and we're working really hard," Bertran added.
