Radioactive waste

I was thoroughly disappointed in some of (Bill Mahon's, director of public information) most recent statements.

To denigrate the Undergraduate Student Government's attempt to inform the public of Penn State's violations of Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines regarding the university's disposal of low-level radioactive waste materials by saying:

"This is just the weekly USG publicity stunt" (The Daily Collegian, March 30, 1989) is reprehensible.

You have reached depths that I thought even the Office of Public Information could never reach. You have proven once and for all that the Office of Public Information at Penn State is truly an oxymoron.

A university such as Penn State, that prides itself on research and education, should be at the vanguard of proper nuclear waste disposal. What example for future professionals in this field does Penn State set by teaching them that shortcuts and circumvention of the law are acceptable means?

The students, faculty and staff of Penn State University, as well as the local townspeople, have every right to know about the potential health hazards that Penn State may be exposing them to.

R. Seth Williams
President, Undergraduate Student Government
