  • Former PSU food employee pleads guilty in cash thefts: A former University food services employee pleaded guilty last week to receiving stolen property in connection with a January theft of money from the University.

Jeanne L. Capparelle, 50, of Bellefonte was released on nominal bond pending a sentencing hearing in May, a Centre County Court administrator said.

Two charges, one of theft and the other of failure to make required disposition of funds, were dropped in accordance with a plea agreement made with the Centre County District Attorney's office, the official said.

Capparelle was charged last January with taking money belonging to the University Department of Food Services over a four-year period.

  • Anchor of boat reported taken from Stone Valley rec area: Someone reportedly took a boat anchor from a vessel in the Stone Valley Recreation Center storage area on Wednesday after damaging the boat to which it belonged, authorities said yesterday.

The owner of the boat, Robert Hearn of Huntingdon, noticed the boat was dislocated from the seasonal storage rack where it was kept, University Police Services said. Upon further inspection, Hearn found dents on the right side and rear of the boat, police said.

The iron boat anchor, valued at $30, was reported missing.

  • Two-car wreck on Route 26 injures Pleasant Gap woman: A Centre County woman received minor injuries Wednesday during a two-car collision in the 2200 block of Route 26, authorities said yesterday.

Diane Casher, 30, of Pleasant Gap was treated and released from the Centre Community Hospital Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the hospital said.

The State College Bureau of Police Services reported the accident occurred at 7:53 Wednesday morning when Casher, who was traveling west on Route 26, struck a car driven by Scott A. Dorman, 21, of Pleasant Gap, also traveling west, from behind.

  • Man's statutory rape charges reduced; trial decision delayed: A Bellefonte man accused of raping two Bellefonte girls 624 times over a six-year period will face no more than 63 counts if he is ordered to stand trial, a Centre County court official said yesterday.

A hearing to determine whether Steven W. Klinger, 32, will be held for trial on the charges was delayed until District Justice Ronald Horner determines the number of charges he feels Klinger should face.

Klinger allegedly raped two Bellefonte girls, aged 10 and 13, at one or more borough locations between 1983 and last Wednesday.

"District Magistrate Homer has reserved his decision until 4 p.m. on Monday," the spokeswoman for the court administrator's office said.

The official said the delay in judgement was due to the large number of charges Klinger is facing.

Klinger was charged by Bellefonte police Saturday with rape and statutory rape. Horner raised his bail, originally $10,000, to $75,000 on Wednesday.

Klinger is currently in the Centre County Prison pending Monday's hearing.

  • Philipsburg-area man injured in two-car accident near 322: A Philipsburg man sustained minor injuries Wednesday morning during a two-car collision at the intersection of East College Avenue and the Route 322 bypass, officials reported yesterday.

James P. Shimmel, 23, was treated and released from the Centre Community Hospital Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The State College Bureau of Police Services reported Shimmel was eastbound on Route 26 and was struck broadside by a car driven by Janet L. Murray, 21, of Ebensburg, who was southbound on Route 322.

Witnesses told police Murray traveled through the intersection after a traffic signal there turned green and was unable to avoid hitting Shimmel.

Shimmel was cited for violating traffic signals.

  • Criminal Mischief: A car windshield valued at $200 was reported smashed by an unidentified person while it was parked in Lot Green One G Wednesday, University Police Services said. The car belongs to Jeffrey Michelman, 1984 Harvest Circle, police said.

  • Criminal Mischief: A University van's tire valued at $140 was reported slashed by an unidentified individual Wednesday while it was parked in Lot Blue E, University police said.
