EMEX '89, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' open house, will be held tomorrow and Sunday from 1 to 4 each afternoon in Deike Building lobby.
EMEX is sponsored by students in the College of Earth and Mineral Science and has been held off and on over the past 25 years.
Dan Borsum (junior-meteorology), chairman of the event, said he would like to see the event run every two years in the spring.
"It is something different to try so we can show the public what we are doing and why we think it is important," Borsum said.
This year the approximately 200 students involved in EMEX will show off their work to the public through various displays and experiments.
"The underlying theme is to have fun and get the public involved," Borsum said.
EMEX '89 events include:
-- A forum highlighting some of the environmental problems facing the Centre Region. A faculty panel will discuss this at 2 Sunday afternoon in 112 Walker Building.
-- Fred Gadomski and Paul Knight, meteorologists on the nightly television show "Weather World", presenting "Test Your Weather I.Q." at 2:30 Saturday afternoon in 112 Walker.
-- Peirce Lewis, professor of geography, narrating a special showing of "Pennsylvania Journey," a PBS documentary on the landscapes and history of the commonwealth at 3:30 Saturday in 319 Walker Building.
-- On loan from the University's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a Penn State artificial heart will be displayed in Deike Building. The public can also see new computer graphics and geographic information techniques in Walker Building.
-- Weather Station tours and a weather balloon launch from the roof of Walker Building.
-- Panning for gold under the Mineral Science Building.
-- Metallurgists rolling pennies and nickel plate them in Deike Building.
"The EMEX is a nice outing for those interested in the technical research we are doing here in the college," said Everett Tiffany, dean's assistant of the college.
