Famous flutist Pellerite to perform, give class

Collegian Arts Writer

Internationally known flutist James J. Pellerite will conduct a master class on solo flute repertoire for University students tomorrow. He will also perform in a free public concert at 10 a.m. in room 110 of the Music Building.

The celebrated innovator of patented designs for flute headjoints, Pellerite will also discuss his research efforts in flutemaking. Seven University students will also perform major pieces from the flute repertoire during a two-hour masters class.

Eleanor Armstrong, flute instructor in the School of Music said, "It's a chance to hear an international artist share his interpretation of some flute masterworks."

Pellerite has presented seminars, clinics and master classes throughout the world, including Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan and the People's Republic of China.

Pellerite will spend the first two hours of the morning's program working with students in a master class setting. "It's like a private lesson, but for an audience. . .and after the class, there will be time for students to ask (Pellerite) about his head joint designs," Armstrong said.

Flute head joint design is being explored by many different groups, Armstrong explained, and much of the innovation comes from the world's top flute performers and their collaboration with master flute makers.

"There's a lot of experimentation going on," Armstrong added.

Pellerite is an acclaimed artist and teacher, and succeeded his own renowned instructor, William Kincaid, as solo flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is a well-known orchestral musician, who has performed as principal flutist with the Detroit Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, Radio City Music Hall, the Chautauqua Symphony and L'Orquestra Sinfonica de Puerto Rico under the direction of Pablo Casals.

He has also played with the San Francisco Symphony, the Dallas Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra, and has performed under the baton of such eminent conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Neville Mariner, Eugene Ormandy, Igor Stravinsky, as well as others.

For many years, Pellerite was professor of flute at the Indiana University's prestigious School of Music. During his tenure there, Pellerite wrote several reference works for flute, now held in high esteem among music educators, artists, teachers and students.

Presently, Pellerite is a faculty member of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Ca.
