  • Hit-and-run at borough corner sends local man to hospital: A local bicyclist was injured yesterday in a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of South Allen Street and West Hamilton Avenue, authorities said.

Richard L. Smith, 24, of State College received a broken collar bone and abrasions on both knees when he was struck by a car on West Hamilton Avenue, the State College Bureau of police Services said.

The driver of the car that struck Smith fled the scene after the accident, police said.

Smith was listed as satisfactory yesterday in Centre Community Hospital,

Police said the crash occurred about 1 yesterday morning when Smith, who was traveling southbound on South Allen Street, turned left onto West Hamilton Avenue.

Smith told police the driver of the car harassed him as the two traveled South Allen Street shortly before the accident by speeding up and slowing down to keep abreast of him.

  • Obscene gesture to authorities draws citation for local man: A State College man was charged with disorderly conduct Tuesday after he allegedly made an obscene gesture to a borough police officer, officials said yesterday.

The man, who police would not identify, was cited and released after he reportedly made a gesture "with his hands and middle finger" to the officer, the State College Bureau of Police Services said.

The incident occurred near 300 S. Pugh St. as the officer was making routine rounds.
