Letter to the Editor
Unfair grouping
Thank you Jennifer Demby for setting the record perfectly straight. I now understand quite clearly the reasons for the establishment of the Ebony Escorts. I see that it is obviously an organization based on the concepts of ignorance, bigotry, and racial prejudice. In her letter to the Collegian of March 21, Ms. Demby uses as the cornerstone of the justification for the existence of this organization, the statement ". . . many African Americans are not comfortable around whites on this campus." This is the kind of unjust, unfair social grouping that has led to our country's racial problems in the first place. For her to assume that she will not enjoy my company simply due to the color of my skin is precisely the Archie Bunker attitude which perpetuates the inter-racial suspicions and stereotypes disrupting our University. Many of you may say that 'black suspicions of all whites are justifiable in the face of recent racial incidents in the area. By the same logic, however, white suspicions of all blacks could be justified by the high rate of violent crimes comitted by blacks in the U.S. To put it more simply, for anyone to assume that I (or any white member of the Student Escort Service am an abusive racist because I am white would be as unjust as assuming that Bill Cosby is a vicious killer and rapist because both he and Willie Horton are black. The Student Escort Service is a fine organization with an outstanding reputation. It is equally accessible to all students regardless of their color. It does not base admissions on such insignificant qualifications as race. To them it simply does not matter. This is the way it should be. Patrick Owen Higgins
